If At First You Don’t Succeed…

Two more pictures from St. Jude’s Fun Day 2008.

Sara’s principal chickened out at the dunking booth, but one of her gym teachers took a turn while we were there, and she was only too happy to dunk him. She got three or four balls, and one of them actually hit the target, but not quite hard enough…. so she walked up and pushed the target to dunk him 🙂  (I told her she could do that).

Still Hot In Texas

I’m tired of this darn heat… still in the low 90’s here and it’s really getting old 😛 I remember getting this joke in an e-mail years ago and found it again today. Thought I’d show you all how wonderful (NOT!) Texas is…

Diary of Yankee’s first year in Texas

May 30th

Just moved to Texas. Now this is a state that knows how to live!
Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. Mountains and deserts
blended together. What a place! Watched the sunset from a park
lying on a blanket. It was beautiful. I’ve finally found my home.
I love it here.

June 14th

Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an air
conditioned home, drive an air conditioned car. What a pleasure to
see the sun every day like this. I’m turning into a real sun worshipper.

June 30th

Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of
cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing for me.
Another scorcher today, but I love it here.

July 10th

The temperature hasn’t been below 100 all week. How do people get
used to this kind of heat? At least it’s a dry heat. Getting used to it
is taking longer than I expected.

July 15th

Fell asleep by the pool. (Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body.)
Missed two days of work, what a dumb thing to do. I learned my
lesson though: got to respect the ol’ sun in a climate like this.

July 20th

I missed Tabby (our cat) sneaking into the car when I left this
morning. By the time I got out to the hot car for lunch, Tabby had
swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and exploded all over
$2,000 worth of leather upholstery. I told the kids she ran away. The car
now smells like Kibbles and sh** No more pets in this heat!

July 25th

Dry #@*&$!% heat, my a**. Hot is hot!! The home air conditioner is
on the fritz and AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me
he needed to order parts.

July 30th

Been sleeping outside by the pool for three nights now. $1,500 in
damn house payments and we can’t even go inside. Why did I ever come here?

Aug 4th

115 degrees. Finally got the air conditioner fixed today. It cost
$1,200 and gets the temperature down to about 90. Stupid repairman peed in
my pool. I hate this #@*&$!% state.

Aug 8th

If another wise a** cracks, “Hot enough for you today?”, I’m going
to tear his #@*&$!% throat out. Damn heat. By the time I get to work
the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell
like Roasted Garfield!!

Aug 10th

The weather report might as well be a damn recording: Hot and sunny.
It’s been too hot to #@*& for two damn months and the weatherman
says it might really warm up next week. Doesn’t it ever rain in this barren
damn desert? Water rationing has been in effect all summer,so
$1,700 worth of cactus just dried up and blew into the #@*&$!% pool.
Even a cactus can’t live in this heat.

Aug. 14th

Welcome to Hell!!! Temperature got to 123 today. Forgot to crack the
window and blew the #@*&$!% windshield out of the Lincoln. The
installer came to fix it and said, “Hot enough for you today?” My wife had
to spend the $1,500 house payment to bail me out of jail.

Aug. 30th

Worst day of the damn summer. I’m not leaving the house. The
#@*&$!% monsoon rains finally came and all they did is to make it muggier
than hell. The Lincoln is now floating somewhere in Mexico with its new
$500 windshield. Maybe it will wash out that dead cat smell.

That does it, we’re moving to Michigan for some peace and quiet.

St. Jude’s Fun Day 2008

Held at the local Chili’s to raise money for childhood cancer research.

Several weeks ago, Sara brought home a chili pepper (paper) to color/decorate. She colored it red and green and then glued shiny red and green confetti on it. She turned her masterpiece in to her teacher, along with a donation, and now it is displayed at out local Chili’s restaurant.

Yesterday was Fun Day, complete with dunking booth (some of the principals and teachers from the elementary schools here in town volunteered to be dunked), raffle, “wheel of fortune”, face painting, bounce house, and more. The kids had a great time!  Melissa won a create-a-pepper t-shirt when she spun the wheel of fortune, they both had their arms painted by a clown, and had tons of fun in the bounce house.

Sun Kissed

At The Movies

Yesterday was girls night morning out, and Amber and I headed to the movies. I can’t even remember the last time I saw a movie in the theater…. I’m sure it was some kind of kids’ movie. Last “real” movie I saw was “Catch me if you can” on New Year’s Eve 2002!!! And only because my wonderful sister-in-law offered to watch Melissa while Greg and I went out to dinner and a movie on his birthday. Yup, it’s been almost 6 years!

Anyway, we left a little early yesterday, and walked around the mall with our cameras… didn’t find much to take pictures of, so we played in front of the theater.

This is the movie we went to see (Oh look! Another self portrait!! 😉 And if you look real close, you can see Amber, too. She’s on the right, just off-center).

The movie was OK. Not as good as I hoped it would be (and I hated the ending!), but worth the $5 we paid. I noticed the silliest things… like the lighting being off, or Diane Lane’s face being out of focus, probably to hide some wrinkles that couldn’t be covered with make-up. The focus fell on her ear.

His And Hers

This was at soccer practice the other day… our cars parked right next to each other. Makes Greg’s little thing look even more like a shoebox! LOL

Me

There. Now no one can accuse me of never posting a pic of myself.

Droplets

Here Fishy, Fishy

A little souvenir from a friend who went to Florida on vacation a year or two ago. I have this mobile hanging in my bathroom. Yup, my bathroom! It’s perfect, really, because the wallpaper (still from the previous owner) is seashells, and there are sandcastles on the border.

First Day Of Fall

Annoyed

No doubt she was thinking “Mom, if you don’t get that camera out of my face, I’m going to kick you in the head with my soccer ball!”

Rogue

We traded in my Santa Fe for a 2008 Nissan Rogue SL yesterday. LOVE my new car!!! I would have been happy with just the basic S model, but Greg just had to have the SL because it had a few minor little extras that the S model didn’t have (it’s a man thing I guess… but wait, isn’t this supposed to me my car?)

We didn’t get home until about 7:30 pm, so I only snapped a couple of really quick pics. I’ll have to try and get some better ones in the next few days.

~~ Edited to add more pictures

Mellie

Yes, this is the picture from Melissa’s birthday party (taken at the roller skating rink) that I LOVE.

Eye On The Ball

First Goal

Monday evening was the second game of the fall season, and Sara scored her first goal this season!

Morning Dew (1)

The Party

It was fun, and all the kids had a great time! Can’t say “all the girls” because one girl’s little brother was there, too.  Four out of the invited seven guests came, plus little brother, so there were still seven kids.

They got to skate for a while first, then they did the Happy Birthday dance on the rink (they spelled Melissa’s name wrong twice! It went from Malissa to Mellissa to Melissa!). Then it was cake & present time, and then more skating.

Melissa wanted chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and a caramel Hershey kiss on top.

The birthday kids got a crazy hat made out of balloons – Melissa turned 12, so they used 12 balloons.

And a panning attempt of Sara skating. I thought these little “walker” things were a great idea! They helped the little ones skate, and kept them from hanging on to the wall the whole time. And they kept them from falling down so much (although they still fell from time to time).

Ike

Ike came and went – I think! It’s still too dark outside to see. It didn’t get too bad here. We got some good rain, but it wasn’t as windy as I thought it would be (or as windy as the meteorologists said it would be). It was still a category 1 hurricane when it came through here, but we were on the western edge of it.

Party Time

As promised (3 weeks ago)….. This is Melissa’s Birthday party invitation. Of course the one that went out to her friends had all the necessary information on it.

It’s a good thing that we’re having her party indoors, as we’re expecting hurricane Ike sometime today.

Samoas

Mmmhh… how I wish I still had some of those around….

By The Sea (6)

Is There A Pilot On Board?

I have to share this! Greg is on his way back from Chicago right now, and of course I’m tracking his flight. See the squiggly line of the route? I’m going to assume – HOPE – that they were trying to avoid all the storms in the area, but it sure looks like a case of “drunk pilot”!

With all the sewing I’ve been doing recently, this only seems fitting 😉
