2009/30: Ice Storm (1)

I won’t torture you with ten days of ice pictures, so I will post them in three groups, and you’ll only have to suffer for three days. I know how some of you are sick of the cold.

This first one is ice on top of a leaf. Not sure if you can tell if you don’t know what it is.

2009/29: Thankful Thursday

Title shamelessly stolen from Amy but it was very fitting.

We had a little ice storm the other night, and I was out bright and early yesterday morning (OK, it wasn’t that early, I do need some daylight!) to take pictures. This is Texas after all, and the ice or snow (if we get any of that white stuff) doesn’t last very long around here.

I was happily snapping away while my fingers almost froze to the camera… thought I had enough, and went back into the house. Then a few minutes later thought, wait! I need some of the car! and go back outside. I snapped one of the ice on our fence and then see THIS CARD CANNOT BE USED displayed on the LCD, and CHA blinking in the control panel! Crap. I run into the house and dig out the manual to see what it means, and it doesn’t sound good at all.  I took the card out and replaced it with another one (worked fine) and went back outside to take more pictures…. hoping the ones on the first card would be OK and it just couldn’t record any other ones.
Unfortunately that was not the case. There were only a few files on the card, and they consisted of weird letter/character combinations and a file extension that I had never heard of. Luckily I remembered that the memory card came with a recovery software CD. It saved the day, because was able to recover 25 out of the 32 or 33 that I took yesterday.
I guess DSLRs and below freezing temperatures just don’t get along.

I’ll have ice pictures tomorrow 🙂

2009/28: Mug Series, part 10

Winter Wonderland.

Did you miss my mug shots?
Nothing better than a nice hot cup of coffee on a cold winter morning.

We had another ice storm here, and it’s almost a winter wonderland outside. The kids will hopefully get a snow ice day, and you may be seeing more ice pictures in the next few days.

2009/27: Crocheted

Pegasus  Pigasus

This is one of Melissa’s crochet creations. We got her the Tiny Yarn Animals book by Tamie Snow for her birthday last year and she combined a few of the patterns to try to make a horse… then decided to make it a Pegasus. As you can see, the face looks more like a pig than a horse, so it ended up being a Pigasus.
She also made a koala bear (I think), that turned out really, really cute, but she gave it to a friend before I was able to take pictures of it.

She did really well, too! Better than big sis!

2009/24: Southfork Ranch

Assignment 1 from Scott’s blog
Collective Shoot: Photograph a local area landmark in your hometown and tell us about it.

This isn’t exactly in my hometown, but it’s within a reasonable distance, so it counts, right? Besides, it is considered world famous, so of course I had to choose…

Southfork Ranch in Parker, TX

Remember the TV series “Dallas”? This was the location for the show. The house was built only a few years before Lorimar Productions discovered it for the TV show. The owners lived in the house during production and only the outside was used for filming. All the inside shots were filmed on a sound stage in California.

This is a shot of the back of the house, and the not-so-olympic-sized pool. It’s much smaller than it looked like on TV.

2009-024-southfork-2

Here we have the famous driveway that was always seen in the opening of the show. This view is from (near) the house. Remember how the driveway seemed to be miles long? Not even close!! Ahh, the magic of television.

This is the actual 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V, that Jock Ewing drove from 1978 until his death in 1982.
(For the car buffs…. 25,270 actual miles, 460 cu. in. engine, 19 feet 3 inches long)

And, the most famous prop: the gun that shot J.R. Ewing

Assignment

Scott posted an assignment on his blog and I wanted to link it here, in case anyone else is interested in participating. I’m certainly planning to… I think it will be fun.
If anyone is thinking about  it, but isn’t sure, I’m going to dare you to do it! 😉  It will be interesting to see what everyone comes up with.
