2009/29: Thankful Thursday
Title shamelessly stolen from Amy but it was very fitting.
We had a little ice storm the other night, and I was out bright and early yesterday morning (OK, it wasn’t that early, I do need some daylight!) to take pictures. This is Texas after all, and the ice or snow (if we get any of that white stuff) doesn’t last very long around here.
I was happily snapping away while my fingers almost froze to the camera… thought I had enough, and went back into the house. Then a few minutes later thought, wait! I need some of the car! and go back outside. I snapped one of the ice on our fence and then see THIS CARD CANNOT BE USED displayed on the LCD, and CHA blinking in the control panel! Crap. I run into the house and dig out the manual to see what it means, and it doesn’t sound good at all. I took the card out and replaced it with another one (worked fine) and went back outside to take more pictures…. hoping the ones on the first card would be OK and it just couldn’t record any other ones.
Unfortunately that was not the case. There were only a few files on the card, and they consisted of weird letter/character combinations and a file extension that I had never heard of. Luckily I remembered that the memory card came with a recovery software CD. It saved the day, because was able to recover 25 out of the 32 or 33 that I took yesterday.
I guess DSLRs and below freezing temperatures just don’t get along.
I’ll have ice pictures tomorrow 🙂
Oh, you big tease!!! I was thinking there was going to be a ton of ice pics which no doubt, are amazing! Hmmm, none of my cards came with that disc………….what a great thing to have. So happy you were able to recover most of them.
Isn’t funny how the love of photography puts a twist on things? Like, to most, an ice storm is just a huge nuisance, but not to a photographer!

I have never heard of that disk either. COOL to not losing them all 🙂

Add me to the list, I have no heard of a disc coming with a memory card…how awesome and even better that it actually worked!!!!
Yes, when I take my camera out in this frigid temps it’s only for a few mins at a time!

I love the Sandisk Extreme 3’s, especially the 30Mbs ones. But, this is the reason I never buy high capacity cards like 8MB or 16MB…you know this is going to happen sooner or later.

Sorry, Doreen…. the ice pictures are aleady scheduled for tomorrow, though. And I used one for my new header 😉
burstmode, I assume you meant GB and not MB? I thought it was probably the cold causing this, but maybe I’m wrong. I was actually thinking of getting an 8GB card sometime before our next vacation, because this is only a 2GB card.

I have the same ones as you! Never had to use it…yet. What a relief to know it works.

Very cool that you have that! I thought they were going to be lost forever. Now I am waiting to see what ice pic tomorrow holds 🙂
