2009/49: Best Birthday Ever

Finally!!! I thought this day would never get here!!
I’m proud to say that the camera arrived on January 22 and I’ve waited until today to start taking pictures with it!
I did get to take it out of the box the day it arrived (or I should say evening, because that darn UPS truck didn’t get here until  6:42 pm!!!), and I did charge the battery the next morning and adjusted all the settings to where I wanted them (for now). I even put a lens on, but no memory card… or I probably would have accidentally taken a picture or two (or three).
I told Greg that as long as I could take pictures OF the camera, I would be OK waiting until my Birthday to take pictures WITH the camera… who knew that box would sit there for WEEKS, begging me to open it!! But I resisted. Talk about willpower!!! LOL
Thank you, Honey, for the best Birthday present ever! (But don’t let him fool you, he did make me fork over the $900 that I had saved up for it so far! So it only counts for half a present, right? I think the other half should be a new lens.)
Needless to say, I’m heading out today to find a suitable first subject for my new baby.

  2. Oh, don’t forget to read the manual! 🙂 You’ll find the D300 a big leap from the D70. Lots of nifty new things to play with.

  6. Thank you! 🙂
Yeah, I wish I was 29 again…. I’m a little bit older than you, but younger than Dalia!
And the best part is that Greg doesn’t know how old I am. He got me a card that he should have gotten me LAST year. I think next year I will tell him that I’m turning 30, maybe he will get me a 30th Birthday card LOL

I am really interested in your thoughts on the camera. I am still torn between the D90 and the D300. Luckily, I did rule out the D700 because I dont want to go fullframe yet and the darn thing weighs a ton. I carry my camera everywhere and it would run my chiropractor bill way up!!!
    I choose in March!

and btw, your negotiations sound so much like those I have with my patient wife!

  11. Thanks everyone!
VERY first impressions of the camera: I’m in LOVE! I only took 5 pictures and haven’t seen them yet other than on the LCD, which is HUGE compared to the one on my D70s.
The buttons and controls are in different spots, but seem easy to get used to. The main and sub-command dials are still in the same spot. It’s HEAVY! Completely stripped it’s 29.1 oz, but that’s still lighter than the D700.
I can’t wait to take it out for some real pictures!! I know you like to play with the custom settings, so anything you want me to “test”, let me know. And check out Ken Rockwell’s website (see link in my sidebar), he has pretty good reviews.
Good luck with your decision! You probably can’t go wrong with either one.
And as far as negotiatns, you have to do what you have to do, right?
Oh, almost forgot… I had the release mode set to Continuous High, and it is FAST! I switched it to LOW for everyday stuff, but the HIGH setting will really come in handy for sports.
