The first blooms on our massive prickly pear cactus opened up last Sunday.

And to show just how massive it is! If you look closely, you can see three yellow flowers. All the green buds will be more flowers soon.

That thing is huge!!! Does it hurt if you go into it? I’m thinking big cactus in the middle of my yard with boys chasing balls equals lots of pain, lol!

  2. lol! I’m thinking along similar lines to Doreen. While the blossom is pretty, I’m not convinced it would be enough motivation for me to have a huge prickly thing in my yard!

They’re great shots, though. I was just distracted by the thought of wrestling with the prickly pear on the way to hang washing….picking prickles out of crying girls who had run into it…

  3. LOL Thankfully no one has run into it yet! It has the tiny little spines that are difficult to find, so you have to be careful when you pick up the leaves or fruit (the little purple things, that are at the very top. They’re from last year, because Greg couldn’t reach when he picked them all off.)

  4. oh my goodness…I am going to have to link you to the cactus lovers website.

BTW—on the subject of boys, it would take a lot more than a measly old cactus to stop their ball chasing.

I came here cause my blogroll is missing and wanted to see if it was a wordpress thing but apparently it’s not. Hmmm, on my dashboard it says it’s visible but it’s invisible to my eyes, lol.

Anyway…………all this time I thought the name of your blog was the daily CHICK, lol!!!

Here is a little trivia, prickly pears in hebrew are called sabras. The word sabra is a nickname given to people born in Israel as they can prickly on the outside and beautiful on the inside.
