2009/160: Working Out
I did it! I officially joined a health club. I’ve lost about 20 lbs by walking every morning, at a local park, but it’s getting too hot out to do that, so when Amber mentioned last week that she’s going to a 24-Hour Fitness to take a tour, I met her over there and we took the tour together.
We liked what we saw (they even have a kiddie pool and slide) and signed up for the free 7-day trial membership. We signed our husbands up, too, and came back that evening to work out…. and brought the husbands with us so they could take the tour as well… and then work out with us. Another great thing at this location is the free child care. Unfortunately Melissa is too old for it (it’s for kids 11 and under), and I was told that she would need a membership to use the pool. They have a great deal for students, so I signed her up for the free trial, because I want her to use some of the equipment, too, not just the pool. She really seemed to like it, especially the bikes.
So yesterday I started the memberships for Melissa and me, Greg decided against it, but he might join the gym at work, which is slightly cheaper than 24-Hour Fitness.
I usually walk an hour on the treadmill, and I’m pretty much done after that! I need to work up to more. Melissa starts out on the treadmill with me, and then moves on to the bikes, and Sara has fun at childcare. I’m thinking about attending a spin class… has anyone ever done one? I was told they are tough! I certainly will not do a whole hour on a bike in spin class after walking an hour on the treadmill, that’s for sure!
Congratulations!
It sounds good for your health. I think it will be hard but good if you are goíng to spin after an hours walking.
…The toughest task is to continue 🙂

good for you! I can’t believe you lost 20lbs….man, if that were me, I’d be screaming on my blog every 5 lbs, lol!!! I’ve heard the spin class is hard too but give it a try, you may love it and might be a nice change from the treadmill. I love the treadmill, we have one here, but it does get boring real quick. Have fun!

Congratulations. Hopefully you show more discipline than I did. I dumped so much money down their throats and got so little out of it, it wasn’t even funny. Most of the time the machines were used.
Coincidentally I lost 20lbs too. I mainly walk it off in the evening when the temps are cooler.

That’s awesome. I really need to start walking/biking!!! I’m was just contemplating joining our local gym, they give you the summer free and they have pilates classes and childcare. Never done a spin class though, let us know how it goes.

That’s so great Michaela! Congrats on losing 20 lbs!!!
Matt loved spin, but he’s a cyclist. I can tell you it is hard, especially that first class, but once you realize how to pace yourself it is easier. Give it a try. But definitely tell yourself that you will do 2 classes, the first to get the idea and the second to really see if you like it!

Glad you joined! It seems to be working out well I like it.

Thanks everyone!
I’m hoping to catch the instructor after a spinning class and as if s/he can show me what it’s all about, and to help adjust the bike. I *think* you’re allowed to go into that room when there are no classes, so maybe I’ll try that first, before I’m stuck for an hour.
Myphotoscout, thankfully this is a pretty big healthclub and even during their busy times, there’s always free equipment. No walking in the evening, here, it’s still HOT then.
Georgia, they do have Zumba, but not sure about Centergy.
Amber, so glad you joined, too!

good for you for joining…I am not a gym person… I understand about the being too hot out… I can’t walk outside in the winter here…too cold…that’s where my treadmill and dvr come in handy….

The gym is great if you have someone to share with, so it’s a wonderful bonus that you and Amber will be able to spur each other on!
If you don’t normally plan a weekly menu, it might be the time to start, though. When you begin to work hard, you get inordinately hungry! That’s fine, if you have healthy lunches/snacks planned, but if you leave it to chance (well, if you’re like me, that is) you’ll eat a lot more chocolate biscuits..
