2009/156: Bonus

Yesterday was the last day of school for Sara and Melissa.
Melissa had finals up until the last day (how wrong is that?!) and is pretty happy that school is finally out for the summer. Sara on the other hand was a little sad because she didn’t want to miss her teacher. Mrs S. is just amazing, and I can see why Sara loves her so much.
Some of you know how extremely shy Sara was when she was little, and soccer has changed that a lot for her, but she still kept her distance. I have never seen her give anyone but me, Greg or Melissa a hug, for example….. until Mrs. S! She helps out in the car lane after school, and it didn’t take very long at all for Sara to just run past me with a BIG smile on her face, and run up to Mrs. S to give her a hug. She did that almost every single day after school.
Greg and I went to the Kindergarten Celebration yesterday morning, and watched them sing songs, and say good-bye to their teacher and principal, then watch a slideshow of how much they had changed during their first year of school. Then it was back to the classroom for just a few minutes, so the teachers could give their good-bye speech to the students. This is where I took the picture of Sara and Mrs. S, and Sara asked me to put it in her room so she wouldn’t forget her ♥

Mrs. S also sent home the sweetest letter to the parents. She told me that it’s not her original, but I know that this is how she feels about her students…

Dear Mr. and Mrs. B.,
I give you back your child, Sara, the same child you confidently entrusted to my care last fall. I give her back pounds heavier, inches taller, months wiser, more responsible, and more mature than she was then.
Although she would have attained her growth in spite of me, it has been my pleasure and privilege to watch her personality unfold day by day and marvel at this splendid miracle of development.
I give her back reluctantly, for having spent nine months together in the narrow confines of a crowded classroom, we have grown close, have become a part of each other, and we shall always retain a little of each other.
Ten years from now if we met on the street, Sara and I, a light will shine to our eyes, a smile to our lips, and we shall feel the bond of understanding once more, this bond we feel today.
We have lived, loved, laughed, played, studied, learned, and enriched our lives together this year. I wish it could go on indefinitely, but give her back I must. Take care of her, for she is precious.
Remember that I shall always be interested in Sara and her destiny, wherever she goes, whatever she does, whoever she becomes. Her joys and sorrows I’ll be happy to share.
I shall always be her friend.

Love always,
Mrs. S
