2010/216: A Taste Of Home, Part 1

I saw my friend Claudia at the pool last week and she told me about this German Deli in the DFW area. Of course a trip there was a must, and we went last Saturday. I was in heaven, and could have literally bought half the store! Instead, I settled on just a few things, and we’ll just have to go back some time.

All the goodies we bought

This is what I was happiest about finding: Almdudler! My favorite soft drink! It’s made in Austria and a blend of apple and grape juice, flavored with alpine herbs (whatever those may be). It’s a carbonated drink that tastes similar to ginger ale, but much better. Too bad they didn’t sell it by the case!

The German flag colored ribbons they tied to the handles of their paper shopping bags were a nice touch.

  1. It must have been a joy to discover some “old friends” and perhaps introduce your children to them 🙂

  2. I’m intrigued by your soda! Sounds very interesting. How long has it been since you lived in Germany? Were you born there?

    • I was born in Austria, and my parents moved to Germany when I was 2. I came to the US in 1987, about a week after I turned 19.

  3. Oh, that soda sounds good. My daughter did the same thing when I found a store with all food imports from England. She wanted to buy most of the store out. LOL

Nice that you found a little piece of “home” close to your new home.

    • New home? Nah. Texas will NEVER be my home, I just live here (and will hopefully get out of here some day)

so interesting to see how different the labels are and having no idea what it is, lol!!

What a gem of a find, how far away is it?
I bet you could order that soda online…

    • They do take online orders, but why pay shipping, when going there is so much more fun? 😉

  7. Ooooooh, how delightful for you! What a find!

I didn’t realize you moved to the states when you were 19! What an adventure (and culture shock) that must have been!

I think I would very much like that soda. Sounds delicious! I wonder if they sell it at the Germany pavillion at EpCot? I will HAVE to check when we are then in October. I know I’ve seen that chocolate and wafers there…I recognize the labels.

Do you girls like the German treats?
