2011/033: Bonus – Screw Loose

When I took this picture, it was just supposed to be for fun, and I never really planned on posting it on my blog. Who knew that only two days after taking it, I would find the perfect use?!

Saying they have a screw loose would be the nice way of saying what I think of our school district. Due to our winter storm early yesterday morning, the schools were closed, and yesterday evening, the school district announced that today the schools would be closed for a second day, due to inclement weather and icy driving conditions. I was happy to see the announcement posted, but what I’m NOT happy about (and I’m sure I’m not alone!) is that the two make up days are April 22 (Good Friday – I don’t have a problem with that) and May 30. Memorial Day!! REALLY??!!! They’re going to make students, as well as teachers, show up for school on a HOLIDAY??? This is one of the very few holidays that Greg gets off from work, and we can plan a getaway for the long week-end somewhere. They could have chosen just a random day-off-from-school as the make up day, but that would have made too much sense.Yeah. I think we just might have plans that can’t be changed.
What’s next? They’re going to find some reason to have everyone show up on Thanksgiving, or Christmas Day?

Wow that pic is perfect!!! I guess you guys don’t have any snow day allotments. LOL Memorial Day?? that is just so wrong! Just add a day at the end of the year, that is what we do.

    • Yes, we DO have planned snow day make up days, and thse two are IT!
I just don’t get WHY they would pick a holiday?! Adding a day (or two) at the end of the year would be much better!

  2. That’s craziness! Why would they do that? I would think the teachers’ union must be going NUTS! I have the feeling this won’t stand up; at the very least, they could have a problem with an awful lot of teachers being “sick” those days.
Our town may have to consider some unusual measures this year, since we are up to day 7 for snow days now, but there’s been no talk of using holidays! Two possibilities are take days out of February or April break or possibly lengthening the school day by 10 minutes for the rest of the year.
You are right – the picture is perfect! What made you take it?

    • I’m sure a lot of teachers AND students will be “sick” that day.
The last day of school is June 2nd, and they could have June 3rd as a snow make up day (it’s a Friday) and I’m sure a lot less people would object to that.

What made me take the picture? I took something apart, and those were tiny little screws.

yup, perfect pic for this craziness! Last year, they shortened our spring break as well as extended the last day of school. Since so many people travel during spring break, those extra days were actually excused absences. There is no way they can make them go on Memorial Day…at the very least, it has to be excused.

    • Oh, it’s GOING to be an excused absence! All it takes is a note from a parent.

Yeah, my kids wouldn’t go on Memorial Day. That’s always the weekend of our marathon. So many people will skip that day that it won’t be worthwhile having the school open. Silly. Great pic!

  5. Seriously?? I bet this gets met with ALOT of resistance from not only parents, but bus drivers, crossing guards, school personnel, etc. Craziness!

    Great pic!

    • You know…. I checked the school district’s facebook page, and our local message board but stragely no one has mentioned it yet. Maybe they don’t realize yet that this date is Memorial Day?

  8. It is frustratingly many people who takes decisions without bothering about the consequences.
My advice to you Michaela: Stop trying to figure out why they act as they do. You’ll never crack that riddle.
Maybe we have something in common?
