2011/033: Another Bonus – Winter Weather (2)

Some more pictures from our winter storm yesterday. I went outside three times, for about 5 minutes each, and that’s all it took for my fingers to get so cold that I couldn’t feel them anymore. Wouldn’t have been so bad out, if it wasn’t for the wind!

Icy plum tree

Frozen blackberry leaves

Frozemary (aka frozen rosemary)

Leaves of whatever plant that is with the red berries. See those “snowflakes” on that leaf in the bottom right corner? If only I had seen them earlier!  By the time I started editing the pictures (hours after taking them!) and went back outside to search for them, they had disappeared.

Frozen dandelion that I picked and placed on the porch railing

Half-buried leaf and dead grass

My (slightly warped) reflection in one of my car’s icy side windows. Note the lobster-red fingers that I couldn’t feel at that point and wouldn’t have known if they had snapped off from the cold 😉

    • Thanks, Doreen!
It was funny, watching the news this morning.. those poor reporters who had to be outside could barely talk because their faces were numb from the cold.

  2. I don’t think I like seeing this kind of picture from you Michaela – but I don’t mean that in a bad way! Do you know what I mean? It feels strange seeing shots like this from Texas. Those little snowflakes are so cute. I wish I had thought to try some snowflake macros.

    • Haha, I know what you mean 🙂
Hey, what are you waiting for? You have plenty of snow out there to try! I bet it’s even snowing again right now! 😉

    • Aw, it’s all stuck together and not prety any more, I’m sure. Actually not snowing today! More chances this weekend. 😦

      • We’re supposed to get snow tonight and tomorrow morning. Crossing fingers that the kids will get another snow day! Roads were still a mess today, with patches of ice everywhere.. and NO sun to melt it. They might just get another day off no matter what the school district says.

  3. I would LOVE to go out and shoot macro snowflakes but our weather is crappy! So far we’ve had snow, sleet, freezing rain, rain, and now we are momentarily back to snow! And it is FREEZING outside!

Plus, I am not even sure there are ANY thing I could shoot to show the flakes! Everything is buried in high banks of snow!

I will be staying warm and safe inside, thank you!

    • Black (or any DARK color) construction paper!
Come on… put on those heated snow pants, nice warm boots and cozy warm jacket and get your butt outside! 😉

Saw on the news today that it’s colder here than in Pittsburg or Green Bay!! (It’s Super Bowl this, and Super Bowl that right now… I’ll be SO glad when it’s over! LOL)

      • I won’t go and you can’t make me!! Heated snowpants or not!

(I promise, I will try that dark construction paper trick one day!)

        • You’re just afraid you’re going to get addicted to taking snow flake pictures 😉

All that cold and rain makes for pretty pictures. I stayed inside with my camera today since we got mostly rain of the freezing variety. Oh, it’s lovely out there.

    • Oh no! Snow is SO much better than freezing rain!

  5. Brrrrr….

Cold here, too. For the desert, anyway. 31° this morning. No precip. Only sunshine here! Love what snow does for inspiration, though. I miss it!

    2. February, 2011 at 18:06

    • Thanks Lisa. Glad I’m not the only one who misses the snow.

  7. Those poor fingers! It’s hard to imagine.

I’m sure I have never been that cold.

It does make for some pretty shots, though! 🙂

  8. Your poor fingers! I’ve done that too. Many times.

Beautiful series of winter photos. I especially like the dandelion.

  9. Thank you, Consuelo, Blue, and Robin.
It’s 26 F (-3C) outside right now, and it almost feels warm! 😉

  10. Need some of those mitten gloves I use to keep your fingers warm between frames.

Here’s a tip for snowflakes you would like. Have any flowers in the house that are past their prime? Pick off some petals and place them in the cold but not where they will get snow on them. After they get good and cold and the snow starts falling, move them where the snow will fall on them. Like these leaves, the snow won’t melt. Then, use your macro to get some great shots.

    • Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately I didn’t have any flowers in the house. They would certainly make for a nice colorful backgound.

I did wear gloves that have the cut-off fingers, but in this kind of cold, they didn’t help all that much. It was worth it, though 🙂

  11. I particularly like the half-buried leaf! You are a talented photographer.
