2011/325: {M}iPad

I had some money saved up for a lens… but then decided to spend it on an iPad instead, and have not regretted it.  Such a fun little gadget.
Of course some of my favorite apps are photography related, and I have a few games, too….. and lots of other useful and fun apps. There’s even a WordPress app, which will really come in handy when we’re on vacation.

The only frustrating thing is that the WiFi doesn’t work great in the living room, because the router is two rooms away in the far corner. But I can still Facebook, check e-mails, play Words with Friends, Hanging with Friends, and surf the web from the comfort of my couch, and not have to run into the computer room during commercial breaks.

If you have an iPad or iPhone, what are your favorite apps?
One of my favorites is Flipboard (iPad only). Makes everything (Google Reader, Flickr, Facebook, etc.) look like you’re flipping though a magazine.
Favorite photo apps are Instagram, Photostudio HD, and Photo fx. I have more,  but haven’t really gotten a chance to play yet.

A big thank you to Scott and Becky for answering all my questions 🙂

love your pic! congrats….I know Buddy loves his, now he’s begging for an iphone for xmas. All his classes let them pull out their phones, ipod etc. Crazy.

Have fun, although sounds like you already are 🙂

    • They do that in our school district, too, and that’s why Melissa got the choice of either a keyboard or netbook for Christmas (and she chose the keyboard). They even let Elementary School students bring gadgets like that, and Sara got to bring her p&s to take pictures (some kind of patterns, for math). She also got to use an iPad a few times (provided by a teacher).

Oh yes, and I’m having tons of fun! 😀

Getting this pic was not easy… I thought I could save the post as a draft (THAT part worked) and then preview it on my iPad, but it only showed a simple white background, and I had to make my “test blog” look like my real blog, pull it up on the iPad, and then take a picture, and replace it with the original one (what you see on te iPad) from this post. Might have been a little more extra work than I thought, but it worked out in the end 🙂

  2. No problem! It is a fun gadget and very useful. BTW, I updated my wife’s iPad over the weekend to Version 5.0.1 without a problem. Nothing lost.

    • What a relief to hear that!! What were your steps? Upgrade iTunes, sync iPad and then upgrade to the new OS?

      21. November, 2011 at 07:54

    • Glad to hear you lost nothing. I wasn’t so lucky, but in the grand scheme of things, it was worth upgrading. Love the new features.

  3. So happy that you are enjoying it! I do use mine less now that I have an iPhone but it comes in handy with the iCloud and photo stream. I take a picture with my iPhone and edit it with the iPad where I get a much bigger and better view of my image. I’ll have to check out Flipboard and Google Reader apps since I don’t have these.

    • Becky, I don’t really like google reader through the google app. You’re better off signing up for a google reader account, add all the blogs you follow, and then add it to your flipboard content, if you decide you like it.

  4. Isn’t it the coolest gadget ever?!! Love my iPad more now than I did when I got it a well over a year ago. The WordPress app is great now. They’ve made some great changes and now I love it. I will come back later with some of my app suggestions. Off the top of my head, Netflix is one of my favorites…

    • Oh and I love Flipboard too!

      21. November, 2011 at 09:03

      • Thanks, KD. Netflix was one of the first apps that I installed 🙂

  5. I recently got an iPod Touch (couldn’t afford an iPad), and I love it!! I have been playing Words With Friends, Angry Birds, and a few other little puzzle games. I downloaded Photoshop Express, it doesn’t do a whole lot, but it’s fun to play with! I also got an app called “Star Walk” – check it out! I use it for a whole lot of little things, mostly email, Facebook, Flickr, WordPress, calendar, contacts, reminders, You Tube, IMDB….. the list goes on…. oh, and once in a while, I use it to listen to music!! 😉

  6. I have Angry Birds Seasons. The kids wanted it, and it was cheaper than the orininal Angry Birds. And they like Fruit Ninja, too.
I think I saw Star Walk in the App Store? I’ll have to go back and look for it.
I’ve long ago neglected my flickr account, but I added Flickr Interestingness and a Stuttgart Flickr group to Flipboard. I have IMDB, too.

  7. I’ve got the iPod touch too (like Holly). I like Cat Physics and Sparkle for apps. They are fun pass-the-time games.

  8. Harry Potter Lego years 1-4 is AWESOME! Mister loves it! 🙂

  9. Oh, and two other games everyone loves…Glass Tower and Cut the Rope.

    21. November, 2011 at 15:21

    • Holly recommended both these games, too, and I downloaded both 🙂

  10. Hey! Looks like you’re having lots of fun with it.

    Bluestockings

  11. I know nothing about apps so I’m not any help… fun foto though!!

  12. I have iPhone and have been using it for quite a while now. I just don’t use a whole lot of the apps! My kids like Angry Birds (I will admit, it IS fun), the toy crane app, play it yourself, spin art and sparkle music (?). I have Instagram and Hipstamatic, but find that I just don’t like to use my phone for photography. The app I use the most? Overdrive – to check out ebooks from my library cooperative. And I don’t use that one much either. =(

    21. November, 2011 at 21:48

    • Thanks, cfbookchick, I’ll have to check out those apps, too.
Yes, Angry Birds IS fun! 🙂

  13. I´ll recomend “Procreate” which is ” a professional painting & sketching app, made exclusively for iPad”. It is really good and fun to use.

    24. November, 2011 at 11:22

    • Thank you Birgitte! I’ll put it on my list!

  14. lucky!!!! I want one so badly!! Do you have to buy a plan to go with it? Ben seems convinced there will be a monthly surcharge.

    25. November, 2011 at 09:32

    • Dalia, I got the iPad 2 without 3G. For the ones with 3G you can get a monthly plan (I think Scott said it’s $15 per month with either AT&T or Verizon, and you can cancel/subscribe any time without a penalty)
I connect to it wirelessly at home (existing router) and use the free wi-fi at other places.
